CREATING GREEN ROADS TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

In October, 2008, Greenwood partnered with Enssolutions Ltd of Hamilton, ON and created a “green road” in North Algona Wilberforce Township, a 3000 m2 stretch on Hewitt’s Corner Road in the Rankin area. The emulsion [Entac] used to bind the recycled asphalt is 100% organic and manufactured from renewable resources. The Tall Oil Pitch [TOP] emulsion was mixed with the RAP in a pugmill and applied with a regular paver. There was no heating of the emulsion or the aggregate – reduced energy footprint & no VOC’s - and it was laid directly onto the granular base. Cars were on the new surface within an hour and there was no impediment to traffic during paving.

This procedure was the first to be used in Canada. During the past 14 months the road has been subject to regular traffic plus fully loaded logging trucks. It looks identical to a cold-mixed road and has stood up as well as the strip of traditional mix of RAP and HF 150.

Our expertise has the versatility to meet your needs, whether it be cold-mixed paving with traditional emulsions, or creating a “green road”.

Applications with the MOE – approved TOP:

  • Surface course stabilization with RAP on secondary roads
  • Base stabilization
  • Granular sealing of shoulders & roundings and parking areas
  • Erosion control on slopes, around bridges and environmentally sensitive water courses
  • Dust control on un-paved roads and haul yards
  • Stockpile sealing for those with outdoor winter sand storage
